Cost of Attendance

The financial aid administrator at each school develops the average Cost of Attendance (COA) for different categories of students. Some programs may have lab fees or higher charges for books and supplies than other programs. Students living off campus may have higher room and board costs and additional transportation expenses compared to students living on campus.

Many families only consider the cost of tuition and don’t take into account the expenses that aren’t covered by financial aid. Everything from ramen noodles to bus or plane tickets home are part of your student’s COA. Sororities and fraternities, intramural sports, and other activities surprise many families with additional college expenses.

For Federal Student Aid programs the financial administrator must use the definition of COA given in the financial aid law. That law specifies that the COA include tuition, fees, and an allowance for living expenses such as room and board, plus books, supplies, and transportation costs. The law also provides limited allowances for handicapped students.

The COA can vary for each student at the same school but students in the same situation must have the same COA.
